HOSHIARPUR: How ethically or legally correct is it for a government-aided college to announce holidays after two of its managing committee members win elections of a religious outfit?
The principal of SGGS College, Mahilpur, announcing Monday and Tuesday as holidays after two of its members Kabul Singh and Surinder Singh won the SGPC election has stirred a debate in the city.

Interestingly, SGGS college gets 85 per cent grant-inaid from the Punjab government.
Jarnail Singh, senate member of Punjab University from Hoshiarpur, told Times News Network that announcing holidays just because somebody has won the SGPC elections is setting a wrong precedent.
He said though he could not comment on the legal aspect of a government-aided college announcing such holidays, it was wrong to go about announcing holidays for insignificant reasons.
He said principals should not be doing these things to please others. Interestingly, principal of the college Surjit Singh Randhawa is embroiled in a controversy of forging certificates pertaining to his date of birth.
The PU Syndicate held an inquiry by a retired judge of Punjab and Haryana High court had decided to withdraw the approval of Randhawa as principal.
Insiders say that Randhawa has been holding on to the post because of the managing committee. Hence the holidays.
